Sausage and Mash – in a pie?

Summer is almost over; the children back at school, the older ones going off to university – empty nest syndrome? Comfort yourself with one of our lovely pies or arrange for some to be delivered to your teenager at University – you know they won’t eat properly otherwise! See our on-line sales page on the website for details (t&c’s apply) and by ordering on line you will receive a free bag for life.

Of course work never stops at Bradley’s Award Winning Bakery even in the heat (!) of the summer days and if we are not busy making our much loved Potato and Meat or our Best Pork Pies then we are creating new flavours that we just love to taste.

Our most recent invention has been to create a totally new pie to help raise some money for a well deserved local charity – Reuben’s Retreat. We already knew about Reuben’s Retreat and had wanted to get involved for sometime but we didn’t really know what we could do.In February it was suggested that we got involved by one of our customers after she had read about our support for Tameside 4 Good and our fundraising cupcakes . Then,  in May when we were at the Pride of Tameside Business awards, we actually got to meet supporters of Reuben’s Retreat as it was the chosen charity for the awards evening . Gill met for the first time with Nicola Graham, Reuben’s Mummy , at the opening of Seraphina Wellbeing Centre in Ashton- and  asked her if we could have some of the charity’s merchandise to sell in the shop. Nicola suggested that as she didn’t have a partnership bakery maybe we could “come onboard” and suggested producing a special sausage and mash pie.

Nicola set up the charity after losing her son, Reuben, at just twenty three months old and the aim of Reuben’s Retreat is to raise enough money to ‘provide a retreat in the North West of England countryside that will relieve the distress of families and their close friends who have suffered the bereavement of a child or have a child suffering from a life limiting or life threatening illness’.

When Nicola suggested the pie we agreed straight away- we love a challenge at Bradley’s!. There followed several meetings and of course lots of tasting and finally we perfected a special pie to be sold on behalf of Reuben’s Retreat with 50% from sales going directly to the charity.

The pie we have created in Reuben’s honour is the unique Sausage and Mash Pie (with peas!). Reuben’s favourite meal was sausage and mash so we just had to make that work and the results are fantastic – taste one and see for yourself.Reuben would have been 3 on 10th September so Nicola, her husband Mike and the rest of the family and their supporters wanted to celebrate Reuben’s birthday in a very special way- for everyone to enjoy sausage and mash (Reuben’s favourite meal) for their tea on that day. We were honoured that quite a lot of people chose to have our sausage and mash pie for their evening meal that day.

To keep things local – as we prefer to – the sausages used in Reuben’s pie are Manchester sausages and they are supplied by local butchers Alf Pearson and Son in Ashton Market Hall. To enjoy one of the pies call into Bradley’s Bakery and if you require five or more pies then please pre order with us by contacting the shop on 0161 330 7126 or by email at Reuben’s Retreat Sausage and Mash Pies are not available on line but whilst you are in the shop buying your pie you can browse through the selection of Reuben’s Retreat merchandise on display.

And still on the same theme, we will be selling “Reuben’s Pie” at the Third Annual Tameside Beer Festival which takes place at Stalybridge Civic Hall on the 13th and 14th of  September. We will also be selling a range of our other pies for those who can’t resist and of course the usual culprits can be bought at our shop as well – Cheese and Onion, Pork and Bury Black Pudding, meat, Potato and Meat. We will also be selling your favourite Bradley’s pie hot with peas over the two days!
